In this tutorial I will show you how to make a certain part of a photo color and the rest black and white. I have loved this effect ever since I saw the dashing and very handsome Spider-man…ahem…I mean Tobey Maguire in the movie Pleasantville, which is great by the way. I’ve decided to use the history brush for this because I think it’s easier than making a lot of complicated selections.
This is the first tutorial that I’ve done for a request, so feel free to leave your own request in the comments or send me an email to kelly[at]photoshopgirl[dot]com. Enjoy!

I am looking at the tutorial for selected color and all I see is the pictures - before/after and no tutorial and I don’t know how to bring up the tutorial. I came to your web site from The Photoshop Raodmap. I would also like to view your other tutorials. Thanks.
Well, that was a duh moment. I just looked down and saw the Launch Video. Sorry about that. Kamaditz

Hey Mat, glad you liked it.
wow very cool and simply thanx for sharing
There’s a much easier way to do this.
Just use the lasso tool to select what you want, then hit cntrl+shift+i, and it turns it to selecting everything but what you highlighted, then, you go to image, adjustments, and desaturate, it does the same thing, but you don’t have to colorize everything by hand.
@Melody: Thanks for the comment, Melody!
@Harley: Hey Harley! Thanks for your input. I made this tutorial using the history brush so that I wouldn’t have to make any complex selections. I just find it easier that way, but to each his own.
Wow, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your site! I especially like the flash tutorial because it makes sure you understand before moving on and puts everything into perspective.
thanks SO much.
@Monica: Aww thanks so much, Monica! What a lovely compliment. Yeah, I decided to do something different because I wanted to make sure all of my readers fully understood my tutorials, because I know some tutorials can be quite cryptic. I’m so happy you like them.
