Quick and Easy Sepia

Be prepared to learn something new today, and I am not only talking about the Sepia Effect in Photoshop. Sepia is the dark brown pigment that comes from secretions of the ink sac of a Cuttlefish. That ink was then mixed in with other chemicals that resulted in the tones of the photograph to be in shades of brown instead of gray, back in the 1880s. They have since developed artificial toners and now with Photoshop you don’t even need the chemicals. Or the Cuttlefish. Pretty neat.

Effect Inspired By Coldplay’s Violet Hill Video

One of my favorite things to do is stay up all night and watch music videos on VH1, although they repeat way too much. But the point is that you can gain a ton of inspiration just by watching them. So when I saw the Violet Hill video I loved the somewhat dark and gritty feel of it. And now the tut is born.

Zoom Effect

Here’s neat little effect for you today, The Zoom Effect. People have been doing this for years with zoom lenses on their cameras and I thought, well that can be done in Photoshop too. Sometimes even when you have a zoom lens on your camera, you may not have the patience to nail it. I don’t, so I just do it post-production. Either way it’s great and an interesting effect to try on your photos!

Soft Focus Effect

Today, I am showing you a technique to make a soft focus effect in your photos. It’s a fun little trick and makes your photos look kind of dreamy.

Tip: If the Soft Focus effect is too much for your taste you can change the opacity of the layer.

Change the Color of Something in an Image

Need to change the color of someone’s shirt so it’s more flattering? Want to change those blue web icons to pink? Admit it, it’s your favorite color! Well worry no more, this tutorial is here to solve that problem. And it’s an easy process. We’ll be using Hue/Saturation for this and you’ll have a bit of fun experimenting with this one.

Tip: In the tutorial I show how to use the Hue and Saturation sliders to get whatever hue you want and how to prevent clipping. But you can also use the Lightness slider below the Hue and Saturation sliders in the dialogue box to get a darker or lighter version of the hue you want.

Boosting Color in Your Photos

Have you ever thought “this is a good photo but it’s a little dull”? Well this tutorial is here to help that problem by boosting the colors using Channels and Lab Color.

A couple tips:

Tip #1: If you find that this enhancement is a bit too strong for your photo then there’s a way to fix that. First you need to select the entire image by click Ctrl + A then hit Ctrl + C to copy the image. Go back to the original version of the image and paste it by hitting Ctrl + V. This adds it as a new layer to the original and you can change the opacity of the layer in the layers panel but using the opacity slider.

Tip #2: Like I mention in the tutorial, Channel A represents Green and Red colors while Channel B represents Blue and Yellow colors. If you feel that there is already in enough red in the photo, say in someone’s skin, you can just add the adjustment to the B channel to add some yellow to the skin to help neutralize the red.

Finishing Touch
